The first information about the church of San Marco dates back to the middle ages XIII century (1247) Despite frequent earthquakes, the original structure was rebuilt using original stone or artistic elements. The religious building is characterized by a sparse facade which presents, however, the beautiful Renaissance stone portal which can be seen in the image, on which stands a coat of arms of Clemente XIV and a stone circle portraying the Virgin with the Child Gesus. Inside, the main altar of the XVIIIcentury, in polychrome marbles, is noteworthy. Various works of art are kept there. The external walls of the contiguous ex Convent, as seen in the initial image, incorporate various architectural elements, including sarcophagus of illustrious residents of Sant’ Angelo dei Lombardi who lived in the XVI century. Many others are the elements inserted in the external wall of the former Convent of the Francescani, of which we show you two sarcophagus Once abandoned in 1807, the structure of the former Convent was used as a barracks for the French army,, a school, a town hall, an infantry barracks. The period 1920-1960 marked the closure and abandonment of the the structure and the transformation into a judicial prison. The photograph on the left shows, in fact, the ruins of the Sant’ Angelo dei Lombardi prison . The 1980 earthquake caused it io be abandoned again. In 2018 it was entrusted to the state property for 9 years.
