The Castle of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi, built by the Lombards dates back to the 10th century and stands at the highest point of the ancient urban core. The city, due to its strategic position, has always played a leading role in the defense of the territory.
The Lombard fortress was transformed into a castle during the Norman domination in 1076.
In the second half of the sixteenth century, the manor was the subject of numerous reconstructions which contributed to changing its medieval appearance, transforming it into a sumptuous noble residence. The works to move the main entrance from the western to the southern side date back to this period.
The most substantial transformations were commissioned by Caracciolo in the 16th century and by Prince Placido Imperiale in 1768. The 1980 earthquake which had seriously damaged the structure of the Castle required a profound renovation.
In the nineteenth century the castle was used first as a court and prison, then as the seat of the notary archive and some offices of the judiciary.
